Bellringers

Bell ropes

Our church has six bells. The tenor (heaviest bell) weighs about 200 kg (4 hundredweight).  Our bells were each cast at different dates between 1860 and 1900.   The bells are mentioned in 1548, when we had three bells ‘and a hand bell.’

Today’s bellringers usually ring for 30 minutes before the Sunday Parish Communion Service, though not for the Iona-style services.   They are also rung for weddings, funerals, special services around Easter and Christmas and national events such a Royal Family celebrations.  The ringers also have regular opportunities to ring the set of 8 larger bells at our sister church, St Michael’s Betchworth.  We have joint social activities including an annual outing and an annual dinner. We are also members of the Surrey Association of Church Bell Ringers, which organises training and other events.

The ringers meet for practice on Friday evenings from 20.00 to 21.30. Any ringer, or anyone who wants to find out about bellringing, is welcome. Bellringing is a pastime that combines physical activity with a bit of thought, but it’s not challenging: anyone can learn to be a bellringer provided they are over 12 years old and can climb the stairs to the ringing chamber. Do give it a try!

For more information on Bellringing or joining the Buckland Band of Ringers please contact our Tower Captain- David Sayce on 01737 242776.
